Creativity is permanent. It’s a full time, life long ability, gift and well, it’s your job. When your project fails or you feel like it’s not working out the way you hoped, you think you can quit. But the truth is - creativity is in your soul and you can’t turn it on and off. Creativity lives on our words, in our eyes when we see the world around us and it’s a superpower that can help others. The most important thing you need to learn is how to sustain it confidently. It doesn’t matter how talented you are, or how successful you are if you can’t sustain it. Yes, you might walk through some quiet seasons, months, or years, but it’s not over.

Our culture tells us that without success our creativity is meaningless. No success seems to equal ‘I shouldn’t do this anymore’ and ‘it’s not working’ …but that’s a lie. Did you know you don’t have to be famous or rich to be creating change in the world around you? We limit our gifts and creativity by thinking its only purpose is success. Success for a creative person is longevity. Success for creative projects is expression.

Creativity is not dependent on age or experience, it has no time limit and you are allowed to spend time working out how it looks for you. There’s no rush. You need to allow the endurance of the creative life to develop your character, and that will produce a strong voice that no discouragement or disappointment could ever take away from you. College for me was just the beginning of this life. I got a strong head-start by being surrounded by teachers and people who are passionate about the creative life. I was in a safe place to start working this out for myself and I’m so thankful I had the time and space to learn more about what it means to hold the gift of creativity.
