Whether consciously or not, during 2020 and into 2021, we have all had to come to terms of just what is our theology regarding our deep need for relationship and community.

Many have lost the convenience of connection we enjoyed in the past, previously displayed over food, laughter, an embrace, a friendly greeting or someone simply being present – and it has caused deep ache globally.

We all long to know we are not alone in our victories and struggles, our times of celebration or grieving, the fun times and the difficult ones – that all of us are created to do life with people!

When God states in Genesis 2:18 “It is not good that the man should be alone”, I do not believe that is just a marriage statement – it is a human one! We desire to be with others, know and be known in community.

But why? Where does that desire come from?

I believe it is because of who our God is and how He made us – in His image (Genesis 1:7).

That image is one of a relational God. The revelation of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit revealed through scripture. The perfect union and picture of relationships. The doctrine of the trinity is clearly present throughout the Bible and is well worth pondering and trying to define, though personally, I have never felt I’ve been able to truly articulate the fullness of what it means or its deep implication for us.

The answer to why this time has been so difficult for many clearly extends beyond the direct results of lives lost as a result of COVID, as devastating as that has been. It is in part because of the trauma of feeling alone and disconnected during it all. This need is wired into us during creation – the need to relate like our Creator relates - in the context of relationship. Desiring to relate to others is something we will never escape from nor should try to. We should embrace what we are wired for – that yes, while life is for God, it flourishes through strong relationships with those around us.

What an opportunity to expand God's kingdom by loving well through authentic relationships and restoring the lost connection felt across the world by building the church – exciting days ahead!
